Summary

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I didn’t want this book to end and when it did, I couldn’t stop crying。 I wanted Jane and Jesse to end up together and be happy so badly。 But for some reason I knew about halfway through the book that they wouldn’t end up together。 This book hurt my heart throughout the entirety of it but it is now one of my favorite books。 I love all of the characters, the plot’s development, and Brodie’s writing!!! It’s just so sad that the two of them never ended up together despite all the love they shared。 I didn’t want this book to end and when it did, I couldn’t stop crying。 I wanted Jane and Jesse to end up together and be happy so badly。 But for some reason I knew about halfway through the book that they wouldn’t end up together。 This book hurt my heart throughout the entirety of it but it is now one of my favorite books。 I love all of the characters, the plot’s development, and Brodie’s writing!!! DNF at page 114。 Characters annoyed me, felt like there was way too much attention and focus on the “technical” side of music and also on her being female and in the industry。 Took away from me enjoying the story。

3。5 it seems I’m on a 3⭐️ steak。 I could feel the direction the author was going but somehow the delivery was off for me。 The pacing was kinda wonky, too many not needed characters introduced and despite wanting to “feel” what I knew I should be feeling I never really did。 Except for the ending, I actually really adored the ending。 The last 50 or so pages bumped this up half a star, it landed so well。 It was not the way I expected it to end and in someways I think that’s why I appreciated it。 I 3。5 it seems I’m on a 3⭐️ steak。 I could feel the direction the author was going but somehow the delivery was off for me。 The pacing was kinda wonky, too many not needed characters introduced and despite wanting to “feel” what I knew I should be feeling I never really did。 Except for the ending, I actually really adored the ending。 The last 50 or so pages bumped this up half a star, it landed so well。 It was not the way I expected it to end and in someways I think that’s why I appreciated it。 It felt right。 I just never quite got there with the execution of the story as a whole。 。。。more

Like a catchy song, this lyrical book hits all the right notes。 I enjoyed learning about the late 60s early 70s music scene--the book delved into a lot of so g composition which went above my head but fans of music theory will surely appreciate it!

If you loved Daisy jones and the six than this is definitely up your alley。 This is the closets book in recent years that has scratched my 1970s rock n roll itch。 While very reminiscent of daisy jones, I think it still holds its own。 Emma does a wonderful job exploring themes about misogyny, mental health issues, drug addiction in the 1970s。

This was one of my 12 books recommended to me by friends this year and I LOVED IT。Couldn’t put it down and ended up finishing it in one day。 Things that remind me of this book: 1。 A Star is Born movie 2。 The Grey’s Anatomy quote “He is very dreamy, but he is not the sun。 You are。”I’m not sure if I’ve read any other books like this one but I’m sure they exist。 The writer does an amazing job of connecting the reader with the characters。 I was rooting for Jane from page 1。

Jane is on a mission to write a great album。 At first with her band, then with Jesse, then on her own。 She does it her way。 Her own “Tapestry” or “Blue” or “Tea for the Tillerman。” She was looking for Johnny to her June, Gram to her Emmylou。 And it was so much more than she ever bargained for。 It’s a hard story that leads to beautiful music。

Rating: 8/10I quite like stories about musicians, so I've had this one on my list to read for a while。 I thought this worked better for me than Daisy Jones and the Six, for the reason that, where the structure in Reid's book meant we didn't actually really get to know Daisy, here, we were in Jane's head much of the time, which made her story feel more immediate。Jane is still an unreliable narrator。 She's got secrets she doesn't want anyone to know。 I think that aspect was my least favourite part Rating: 8/10I quite like stories about musicians, so I've had this one on my list to read for a while。 I thought this worked better for me than Daisy Jones and the Six, for the reason that, where the structure in Reid's book meant we didn't actually really get to know Daisy, here, we were in Jane's head much of the time, which made her story feel more immediate。Jane is still an unreliable narrator。 She's got secrets she doesn't want anyone to know。 I think that aspect was my least favourite part of the book。 I would much have preferred the drama between Jane and Jesse, if there had to be any, come from a different source。The musical journey through the book was interesting。 Jane's talent struck me as similar to someone like Carole King。 I thought Brodie captured really well the shift from folk into soft rock in the '70s, and I know the music was inspired by real musicians and record companies of the time。Jane's knowledge of the industry and determination to do things her own way were an interesting choice。 It's a contrast to the young female musicians who get chewed up and spat out by an industry that takes advantage of them and controls everything they do。 I thought Brodie's more savvy heroine made a nice change, but I also felt that Jane's awareness made the story less propulsive and the stakes feel lesser。 I also think the ending was rather neat。 There wasn't much drama。Or the drama was centred on Jane and Jesse's relationship。 I enjoyed their dynamic, but I think there could have been more depth, less about their physical connection and more of a spiritual connection through the music。 There was some of that, but one thing Daisy Jones and the Six did well was the connection between its two creative, difficult leads。 I would have liked more of that in this book。I thought the story was very evocative in terms of the setting, and in the depiction of the music。 Brodie rendered the atmosphere really well, I felt。 And the writing is good here too。 I'd be interested to see what Brodie writes next。 。。。more

ok ugh … i found this very hard to get into and all the different side characters very difficult to keep track of。 once i was about halfway through things started to pick up and some scenes were really really great, but i didn’t feel particularly invested in the main characters。

Sex, drugs and rock n roll…1969 Bayleen Island folk fest a fun music festival with local groups and also big names like Jesse Reid。 Unfortunately, Reid has a major motorcycle crash and isn’t able to perform。 Luckily, Jane Quinn and The Breakers were there to take his place。 This performance changed all of their lives。 Jesse stays on the island to recover and becomes friends with Jane and the band。 They even go on tour with Jesse as his opening act。 Jane and Jesse work together on albums and also Sex, drugs and rock n roll…1969 Bayleen Island folk fest a fun music festival with local groups and also big names like Jesse Reid。 Unfortunately, Reid has a major motorcycle crash and isn’t able to perform。 Luckily, Jane Quinn and The Breakers were there to take his place。 This performance changed all of their lives。 Jesse stays on the island to recover and becomes friends with Jane and the band。 They even go on tour with Jesse as his opening act。 Jane and Jesse work together on albums and also strike up a relationship off stage。 Everything is going just how Jane dreamed it would until it didn’t…secrets from the past won’t stay buried, corporate executives don’t appreciate how strong willed Jane is and life gets in the way。We follow Jane through the ups and downs of music, performing, love and life。This book is going to be compared to Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid but I feel like they tell completely different stories。 These are great characters and great music sprinkled throughout with tons of the backstage drama on the side。 It was a great time and a very strong debut for Emma Brodie。 Can’t wait to see what she comes up with next。I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion 。。。more

This book was very much along the lines of Daisy Jones and the Six, and being a huge lover of TJR's books, I enjoyed it very much。 The main character made some interesting choices, and the plot wasn't predictable, which was great。 This book was very much along the lines of Daisy Jones and the Six, and being a huge lover of TJR's books, I enjoyed it very much。 The main character made some interesting choices, and the plot wasn't predictable, which was great。 。。。more
